Building your own tabletop – professional tips from 60 years of carpentry experience with solid wood such as oak or ash
"Once you've worked with real wood, you'll never want to stop." – Uzun Furniture Workshop
Building your own table is more than just a DIY project – it's an experience with nature. But without the right knowledge and materials, the dream can quickly turn into frustration. In this article, we'll show you, based on 60 years of craftsmanship, what really matters when building a tabletop – with practical tips, case studies, and experiences from our workshop.
1. Wood quality is crucial – why we only use wood that has been stored for 10 years.
The most common mistake when building a tabletop yourself is using the wrong wood. At Uzun Furniture Carpentry, we work exclusively with air-dried, regional solid wood that has been stored for at least 10 years .
Only in this way can it be guaranteed that the wood is free of tension, dimensionally stable, and ideal for further processing. Fresh or kiln-dried wood will warp – no matter how well it has been glued .
Recommendation:
- Use only regional, air-dried wood.
- Store it at room temperature for at least 2 weeks before processing.
2. What type of wood for your tabletop?
Oak is robust, durable, and its hardness makes it ideal for solid tabletops. But we also love ash , because its grain is particularly elegant and fine – perfect for modern dining rooms.
Recommended thickness: 3–4 cm. At 5 cm or more, the tension increases – this requires additional expertise.
3. Our professional techniques: tools, gluing & stabilization
Our step-by-step technique:
- Planing : Using a planer to bring the material to the same thickness.
- Gluing : Align planks precisely & insert dowels
- Press : Press long and evenly
- Sanding & Oiling : Smooth & protect after hardening.
Special professional tip:
For wide or thick tabletops , we use steel strips underneath the surface. These prevent cracking caused by tension in the wood over the long term.
4. Case study: A 6 cm thick tabletop that pushed us to our limits
A customer wanted a 6 cm thick oak tabletop . Despite careful workmanship, cracks appeared after 3 months. The solution: We optimized our dowel jigs and implemented stable joints with reinforcing strips . Since then, even the thickest tabletops hold up – guaranteed.

5. The 5 most common mistakes when building a tabletop
- Use cheap, unseasoned wood
- Inaccurate or excessively short pressing times
- Dowels are missing or incorrectly positioned
- No steel strips for large tabletops
- Impatience in surface treatment
Our advice: Sanding or oiling too early risks cracks and waves.
6. What we really advise DIY enthusiasts
Patience is your most important tool. Plan enough time, work precisely, and check every step. If your tabletop is wider than 90 cm or thicker than 4 cm, be sure to install a steel substructure .
This is the only way to ensure your tabletop remains dimensionally stable and visually flawless even after years.
